BIG-06680Kovotojų charakterį ir užsispyrimą pademonstravusios Vilniaus „Kibirkšties-VIČI“ krepšininkės pergale pradėjo 2013-2014 metų sezono moterų Eurolygos turnyrą. Autsaiderėmis vadintos Vilniaus krepšininkės svečiuose 68:66 palaužė Pulkovicų CCC klubą iš Lenkijos, kuris praėjusiame Eurolygos sezone užėmė 6-ąją vietą, ir pasiekė pirmąją pergalę.

5Kibirkstis-Vici Vilnius held their nerve from the free-throw line to take a 68-66 road win over CCC Polkowice in their first EuroLeague Women Group C game on Wednesday. Vilnius made nine of their 10 shots from the line, most notably three in the final 15 seconds, to hang on for victory having led for most of the game. Vita Kuktiene was responsible for the sole miss with 11 seconds to play but she made the second of the pair.

This meant her team still held a 66-65 lead after Polkowice’s Jelena Skerovic’s responded with a three-pointer on the fastbreak moments later.

Kuktiene returned to the line with five seconds left and this time showed complete composure to convert both and seal victory.

Kibirkstis had earlier held a 46-33 third-quarter lead after Rima Valentiene drilled a three-pointer. But Polkowice repsonded to take a 51-48 lead when Valeriya Musina and Magdalena Leciejewska opened the final stanza with back-to-back lay-ups.

The teams traded blows in a tense fourth quarter until Mante Kvederaviciute’s driving lay-up gave Vilnius a 56-55 lead and sparked the decisive 9-0 run.

Kuktiene led all scorers with 18 points while Janel Mc Carville (14), Belinda Snell (11), Skerovic (11) and Magdalena Skorek (10) all hit double figures in a losing effort.

Kibirkstis-Vici Vilnius coach Jurgita Streimykyte-Virbickiene:
“We are very happy. CCC is a very experienced team and we expected a tough match. This is confirmed. We fought very hard, made our plan and we won.”
CCC Polkowice coach Jacek Winnicki:
“Defense decided this match result. In the first half we played bad on defense. We have to improve this, because you can not win games in the EuroLeague playing so bad on defensive.”
Kibirkstis-Vici Vilnius guard Rima Valentiene:
“I am very happy. We traveled to Polkowice 15 hours. It was very tiring. We fought from the beginning to the end. We played good defense, the attack also functioned well. In good spirits we will go home.”
CCC Polkowice forward Janel McCarville:

“We played the first half not aggressive on defense. We need to work on it before the next matches. We wanted to win the first game in the EuroLeague. Too bad it did not happen.”
